Eccoci di ritorno dal Raduno del Black Shadow Swiss MC a Weite.
Quest'anno siamo partiti Io e Lorenzo, Norton P11 e Commando Roadster.
Zero autostrada.
Back from the Black Shadow Swiss MC Rally in Weite.
This year it was me and Lorenzo — Norton P11 and Commando Roadster.
We rolled out on 4 August and got back on 20 August. We decided to make
a proper holiday of it, and for the way home we took the scenic detour…
all the way to Barcelona. Over 3,000 km in total. And not a single metre
of motorway.
Here's the trip, in a nutshell:
4 August — wheels rolling out of Rome at 5 in the morning, beating the
brutal heat. We pulled into Formigine that evening, to the good old Cà
del Rio, after around 560 km (thanks to a string of road closures). We
ran the whole Via Cassia up to Florence, over the Futa Pass and on
towards Formigine.
5th — we push on toward Trento and stop right below the Manghen Pass, in
punishing heat.
6th — time to earn it: the gorgeous Manghen Pass, then the Tonale, then
the Gavia — still the most beautiful of the lot, if you ask me. We crash
for the night just past the summit, with — at last — a breath of cool air.
7th — rally-bound: up and over the Umbrail Pass / Giogo di Santa Maria
into Switzerland, then the Flüela Pass to drop into the St. Gallen
canton and Weite.
7/8/9 — rally days, hanging out with all the old friends.
9th — Bruno treats us to lunch at the British Corner, and around 2 pm we
fire up the bikes for the Splügen Pass and on to Chiavenna… the rally's
over, but the ride is far from done.
10th — off to Biella, hugging the entire shore of Lake Como… In the
afternoon we roll in as guests of Gioele and his wonderful, big-hearted
family.
11 August — we cut across the countryside around Turin… Cuneo, and by
evening we're parked just below the Colle della Lombarda, poised to
cross into France.
12th — we take on the mighty Colle della Lombarda and drop into France —
instantly missing the chill of the pass as the heat cranks up to brutal
again. Then the spectacular Gorges du Verdon, riding every inch of the
jaw-dropping Route des Crêtes.
13/14/15 — we carve across the whole of France through the back country:
dream roads, flawless tarmac, barely a car in sight, welcoming little
towns and endless seas of lavender… in hellish heat we pull up at the
foot of the Pyrenees, ready to climb toward Andorra.
16th — an easy day, just a handful of km… We cross the green Pyrenees
and stop to take in Andorra's capital, Andorra la Vella, checking into a
seriously plush hotel.
17th — we head for Sant Cugat del Vallès, about 30 km from Barcelona,
our base for two days to do the city properly by local train and metro.
17th pm and 18th — Barcelona on foot… Barceloneta beach… hidden alleys…
beer and paella.
19th — a quick 40 km to Barcelona's port, where our ferry is waiting to
carry us to Civitavecchia.
20 August — we dock at Civitavecchia around 7 pm… ashore, we knock out
the last 75 km to our trusty Elliot Pub — because, after all, it's
Thursday (On Any Thursday)… beer, dinner, and the final few kilometres home.
Another cracking trip for the memory books!
A few photos, in order, to tell the story of the Trip.
